I’ve had this card for a few months, so I wanted to write down my experience.

Application
Application link, but I do not recommend applying directly through the webpage. I first entered through the web link, filled in personal info, and then got a “channel not selected” type error and could not continue. So I recommend downloading China Guangfa Bank’s mobile app and searching for “American Express card” inside it.
You can choose home delivery or in-branch pickup. No card production fee or shipping fee. It usually takes around two weeks.
Activation
Although I was still a minor, activation went surprisingly smoothly. I walked into a Guangfa branch, explained what I needed, and the staff handled it directly.
Their non-cash service counter is open (not behind glass), which felt less distant. The staff asked about use case; I said overseas shopping and travel. She got the card, activated it, and even asked me to test it on the spot.
At first, binding to CN-region PayPal and App Store failed, and I panicked a little. I even suspected the card itself. Then I realized the card might not have any balance yet. I tried binding to Alipay first, which succeeded. After transferring some money in, it could be bound normally elsewhere.

Usage Experience
I do not use it heavily. Below are some sample scenarios.
Online
- Cloud QuickPass: can be linked, but only balance inquiry works.
- PayPal (China region): works; I have not tested overseas regions.
- Oracle: free-tier registration failed with a classic “abc”-style error.
- Apple Pay: still cannot be linked, though it seems to be in progress.
- Google Cloud: works. I used the free $300 credits, but identity verification is required.
- RedTeaGo: payment works. I bought an eSIM and tested it.
Offline
- CMB and ICBC ATMs: card is recognized, showing “AMEX China” or “AMEX Debit China”, but balance inquiry returns “issuing bank cannot process this transaction”.
- 7-Eleven in Hong Kong: payment failed, likely because balance could not cover pre-authorization.
- Star Ferry in Hong Kong: paying with AmEx card gives a fixed HKD 1 discount.

Notes
- This is a RMB single-currency account and defaults to a Tier-II account.
- CVV is on the front-right middle area, four digits. Be sure to cover it when taking photos.
- 3DS is not supported, so sites requiring 3DS will not work.
- Pre-authorization can be up to 120%. Make sure balance is sufficient before payment.
Tips
- Minors cannot use Guangfa mobile banking. You can follow Guangfa’s official WeChat account and bind the card for transaction notifications.
- American Express has other domestic benefits too. Search the “American Express” mini program.
Summary
Overall, this card is less universally accepted than Visa or Mastercard, and many places do not support it. If CMB had not launched its Mastercard debit card (standard), I might recommend this one. But now there are better alternatives, so there is no strong reason to apply just for this card.
